Works For Me Wednesday – Smelly Towels

This week there is a THEMED Edition of Works for Me Wednesday – Cleaning Tips!! Make sure you check out the link at the bottom to see tons and tons of cleaning tips.

Let me begin with the fact that I am awful, can you say HORRENDOUS at cleaning. It is not just that I hate it and procrastinate – which I do very well!! I have tried to be good at it and truly believe it is a gift. For example, I cannot clean the tub. No matter what I do, I cannot seem to get it as clean as I like it – ENTER, STAGE LEFT, my cleaning lady!!

Now this is my ONE luxury – actually I guess you could call it the What I have Done for ME!! I do not have my whole house cleaned. I would have to spend so much time cleaning in preparation for the cleaning lady, I may as well do the cleaning myself. However, I quickly found with all the kids, dog and hubby, that the kitchen and baths NEED to be cleaned, not only for the gross factor, but for sanitary reasons. When I was teaching, I found a fabulous woman to clean JUST my kitchen and 2 baths twice a month.

Even though I do not teach anymore, I cannot seem to let her go. Even as we look at budgets, I cannot let go…

Check out my microwave – It is so clean, you could use it as a mirror for your make-up!! If you look close, you can see my reflection taking the picture. HOW CAN I LET THAT GO!!

That is really why I coupon, so I can KEEP my LUXURY!!

OK, enough of my blabbing and on to my real tip – other than get your self a kitchens/bath cleaner. I really have found a great tip.

SMELLY TOWELS or clothes in general!!
Do your clothes, especially towels, come out of the wash SMELLY?? I hate that moldy smell. There is nothing worse than getting out of the shower and grabbing a clean towel, bringing it up to dry your face and EWWWWW, that STINK.

I know, TIP #1, do not leave your wet clothes in the washer for days and days. I really have been getting better at that. That is also a saving on your water bill tip. It costs a lot if you keep having to re-wash all your laundry because you leave it in the washer too long!!

Even with my VAST improvement getting them on the dryer, all my clothes still smelled. I did some research and found out that it is a HUGE issue with front load washers in particular, but there are some things you can do.

“Turns out that in front-loading washers, mold and fungus builds up in the “boot,” which is that rubbery thing you see around the edge of the washer opening when you open the door. If you pull back the rubber and look underneath it, you’ll see mold – wipe it out with bleach.” Also, follow manufacturer instructions to run a cleaning cycle with bleach every now and then.

Then start leaving your washer door open so that it can dry out between washes.

We are also using FAR TOO MUCH detergent and fabric softener in out front load washers. Over time soap residue can accumulate within the fibers of the towels ensuring that not only do they fail to absorb as much water as they can but they also don’t dry as effectively as they should. When your towels seem to get a funky smell immediately upon getting wet again, failure to dry completely thanks to soap residue is usually the culprit.

My main problem was towels. I had dreams of buying new towels if this did not work, but alas, it did so my old towels are still hanging in there, for now.

The Vinegar Method

  • Put your towels in the washing machine, using the hottest water available. Add one or two cups of white vinegar. Do not add detergent, fabric softener, or any other products at this time. Run the washer.
  • Leave the towels in the washer and wash the same load again just as you would normally with laundry soap. Again, use the hottest water available. Don’t use fabric softener or any other products.
  • Dry the load in the dryer using a high heat setting. Towels should be thoroughly dry when you pull them out. If they’re not dry, put them back in, or move them immediately outside and hang them in the sunlight.

Others recommend using 1/2 cup of baking soda with hot water for the 2nd wash (not detergent).

I may still get some new towels – when there is a SALE of course!

Reader (and my pal) Juliette sent me this GREAT tip:

“Fels Naptha” Yellow bar soap found in the Laundry Aisle (usually on the top shelf) Very old fashioned soap my grandmother used. IT gets stains out of almost everything. I have used it to clean stains out of rugs, baseball hats and Sneakers. I love this stuff. I use it on the kids soccer shin guards and the grass stains rinse out immediately. Old Grease stains come out. Fels Naptha has also been known to help with Poison Ivy. It dries it up pretty quickly and helps to speed up the recovery time.

THANKS Juliette, I will keep my eye out for them!

Do you have any other good cleaning tips??

Works For me Wednesday – Homework Bin

When my son entered Kindergarten – oh so many years ago- I soon realized the PAPER, PAPER, and more PAPER that got sent home. It was notices, art work, and homework. As he progressed into 1st and 2nd grades, there was more homework. That homework was all worksheets. When I was in gradeschool, I thought most of our homework was out of textbooks, but now there is so much PAPER!

I quickly realized we needed a way for him to store his papers, yet have easy access to them when packing his backpack. He also needed a place to keep pencils (so he would stop taking mine everyday!). At our house homework is done at the kitchen table, so having something in the office was not feasible or visible during the morning rush. It had to be in the kitchen.

Here is what we did. I got a magnetic wall file from Staples – not sure what I paid, that was pre-frugality, but probably $10. This enabled him to keep papers (before he was old enough to have a desk in his room), and hold a couple pencils – though if you look at the pic on the top we also have a small white magnetic bin that holds pens/pencils and small memo paper.

This has worked GREAT!! It also made it easy for mom the few times I got a call that he forgot to pack his homework, I knew right where to look. My son is now in 5th grade and needs to be more accountable for his homework – so even though he still does homework on the kitchen table, he does have a desk in his room and stores more items in his backpack. Time to pass on the bin to my daughter who just started kindergarten!!
This WORKS FOR ME, what works for YOU?? Let us know!!!

Also, I need your help. Next week, Works For Me Wednesday has a theme – cleaning tips. What is your best cleaning tip. I want to put together a post with my readers BEST tips! You can email it to me or post in the comments. THANKS

Works-For-Me Wednesday SOCKS

When looking around for meme’s (that is blog-speak for weekly THEMES) I stumbled upon Works-For-Me Wednesdays that is hosted by We Are THAT Family. Each week people post little ideas about WHAT WORKS FOR THEM. It can be any topic at all. There are tons of ideas posted every week. Talk about a WEALTH of knowledge!

Since you all are HOPELESS, yes I said HOPELESS, as am I, at doing things for ourselves, I may alternate or only make the What Have You Done for YOU a monthly item vs. weekly.

Back to Works For me Wednesday. This week, We Are That Family posted about “missing socks” and how she solved that problem. Boy did this article hit home. I must say that socks are my nemesis (Webster defines as: one that inflicts retribution or vengeance or a formidable and usually victorious rival or opponent) That is an understatement.

I HATE washing socks. My family NEVER unrolls the socks and they arrive rolled up in a ball just as they were yanked off the foot – filled with dirt/sand and other various foot crud. So after all the time pulling them out, I can look forward to sorting and matching. Can I say woo hoo (NOT!) It is hard to believe, but I HATE sorting and matching EVEN more than washing them in the first place. My 10 year olds feet are getting bigger so now it is hard to tell what socks are mine or his.

HELP – any ideas?? I was thinking of tossing ALL old socks (some are really gross anyway) and starting over with certain types for certain people OR marking each toe with an initial. What do you think?

I love some of the ideas from WeAreThatFamily – she keeps socks downstairs and has a basket for each family member. She does not match them, just tosses them in each person’s basket. The idea of having socks on the first floor is ingeneous – though I have no idea how to actually implement that. RocksInMyDryer eloquently stated the reasoning behind it :

Too many times, we were ready to dash out the door, when the whole getting-ready process screeched to a HALT as my little creatures realized they needed to put on socks first. And so they meandered upstairs, pausing to flush the toilet, rearrange the Lego box, unmake their bed, hang their dirty underwear on a lamp, etcetera, etcetera.

Actually, I have no idea what they were doing up there. I just know that it took too long, and more often than not, they came back downstairs with a blank-eyed look and NO SOCKS.

So I moved the socks into a downstairs drawer, and it has carved a significant chunk of time off the getting-ready process.”

WOW – you cannot believe what an AHA moment that was. That happens DAILY in my house! I am definately going to get back to you on what I decide to do.

What Works For You?? Please SHARE – I would LOVE to hear what you do about socks, but ANY tips and tricks are welcome!

Also, check out Deb at FrugalLiving&HavingFun posts Tips & Tricks in the Kitchen. My favorite tip from her this week is great – How to Keep Chicken Moist:

If your roasted chicken tends to be too dry, try stuffing a whole apple inside the bird before roasting. Just toss the apple before serving! I’ve also have stuffed celery stalks along with the apples. This makes a wonderful tasting chicken broth as a soup starter.

This is great since the Chicken roasters were just on sale and I tend to buy too many apples that do not get eaten.

WHAT GOOD TIPS DO YOU HAVE??

Tips & Tricks Tuesday

I have not started a Tuesday theme yet. My friend over at FrugalLiving&HavingFun has been posting daily Tips & Tricks!! I LOVE THEM!!!

So with INSPIRATION from Deb, I am going to post my 2 fav’s from her Tips & Tricks each week! Head on over to her blog to see even more.

Here are this weeks TWO TIPS & TRICKS:

  • How to Freeze Bread – If you are going to freeze bread, make sure you include a paper towel in the package to absorb moisture. This will keep the bread from becoming mushy when thawed.

  • How to bake a flat top cake – I hate that my tops are always rounded and they do not stack well, never mind ability to decorate. Deb gives us the following tip: Put your cake batter into a “complete” cool oven. Set your oven heat to 250 degrees, 10 minutes later increase the oven temperature by 50 degrees. Ten minutes later, set the oven temperature to the correct setting for your recipe!!

NOW IT IS YOUR TURN!! What Tips & Tricks do you have for us this week?? In the future I will have a Mr. Linky to link up your blogs, but in the meantime, PLEASE give us tips in the comments!!!
