Sanitize your Washing Machine

There are many things that happen at the beginning of the month… NEW coupons, organize and purge expired coupons, and sanitize your washing machine.

If you have been following me any amount of time you know I suck at laundry (I am sorry, but there is no polite word to explain just how bad I am).  Since I frequently forget to switch the wash, I not only get smelly laundry, but I also get a smelly washer.

Luckily I now have a washer with an automatic cleaning cycle, but I seriously had no idea you needed to clean your washer – I mean it has soap and water in it all the time – right?!?  Well my friend Lauren over at MamasLaundryTalk recommends sanitizing your washer monthly.  Since it is the first weekend of the month, that is what I did.  You do not have to have an automatic cycle, Lauren has the instructions right here for older washers.  Do you sanitize your washer?

Now I have a long way to go before I can even say I am adequate at laundry, but I continue to take baby steps.

Simply Sunday | 10 Safe & Fun Video Websites for Kids

It is funny sometimes that just when you need something, it magically appears in your inbox :) .  Last week during out first LIVE Facebook Chat, people had asked to see more fun/frugal things for kids to do.  I will be gathering that info and posting on a regular basis.

However, I have also recently had issues with my son scrolling YouTube for funny videos.  While there are MANY kid friendly videos there, I found out all too quickly while I was a teacher looking for material for my Physics class, that even the most innocent search word can result in a totally inappropriate video.  You have no idea the disgusting things people can do with Sir Isaac Newton’s physics principles. There is no way to rate or block inappropriate YouTube content (at least not one that I know of).

So serendipitously – nice word, huh? – as I was scanning through my numerous email newsletters I spied 10 Video Websites for Kids That are Safe & Fun by MakeUseOf.com. What I love about this list is that it is just sites that have videos, not necessarily games – though some have both. So if you are away and have your computer or iphone or any of those other technical gadgets I do not have, you can just get online and watch these kid friendly videos.

Here are the top 10 sites – head over to MakeUseOf.com for a more detailed review:

Let me know which ones you like – we will be checking them all out this week. Are there any other kids websites you recommend?

Simply Sunday | Then They Do…

I do not know about you, but this summer has been extremely trying for this stay-at-home mom.  The kids have been fighting non-stop.

I remember when we used to just be so happy to be out of school.  Unfortunately in these unsafe times, kids have lost the ability to figure out how to have fun on their own.  Even though I am not one of those parents, our society has turned into scheduled time for all kids – planned playdates, craft time, multiple sports, etc.

What ever happened to “Just go out and play?” I am lucky that my kids are pretty good at this, however if I get the question – “What can I do that is fun?” one more time, I may just scream.

Last week, my sister asked us to go to the beach with them. I will admit, I am my own worst enemy sometimes. It was 90-100 degrees and yucky and the thought of lugging 3 kids – one just a toddler, to the beach is not my idea of fun. I have no beach toys and just visioned sweating to death and chasing my 20 month old all day long, keeping her from diving into the ocean.

I went anyway – that is what mom’s do for their kids. AND I have not planned anything much for them this summer – so I owe them one – even though they have been getting punished most days by noon – LOL! Much to my surprise, it was pleasantly cool at the beach and my 20 month old was awesome. Everyone had a blast, even though I got sun burned – blotchy type. I am great at sun blocking the kids, but then get distracted doing mine. So I missed one whole foot, my forehead, knees and a few blotches here and there. Let’s just say it is a little sore and not at all attractive.

BUT that does not matter. My kids were smiling and said it was the best day of their life.

AND THAT IS WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT…

So when you are having those – “I want to kill my kids!” days, just take a listen to this awesome Trace Adkins song: Then They Do.  (Sorry I could not embed it, but follow the link over to YouTube and watch the video – you will be glad you did – brings a tear to my eye everytime!)

ENJOY… and love your kids before you miss them….

Simply Sunday | ENJOY

Have you all been watching America’s Got Talent? I am constantly amazed by the deluded people who think they are talented – some of who you know have GOT to be there on a bet. They just have to be.

However, every year there are acts that surprise us and take our breath away. We are VERY stressed and on edge in my house, trying to sell the house and this clip was just what I needed.

It was not that the performer has epilepsy…

it was not Sarah McLaughlin’s song – which always gives me chills…

It was THAT truly relaxing, stunningly beautiful performance…

(though I wish they did a better filming job)

HOPE YOU ENJOYED IT!

Simply Sunday | Simple & Cheap Organics

I am trying to get back to doing our Simply Sunday posts.  A few readers have asked for more organic information and since that is not my thing, we have a guest post today – so let’s welcome Cara!!

Simple and Cheap Organics- Health Food You Can Make at Home for a Fraction of the Retail Price

A guest post by Cara

When I was growing up, ‘health food’ meant expensive food that tastes worse than the package it came in.  As I’ve looked further into healthy eating, ventured into the health food store and saw that they do actually have food that tastes really good, and made it a priority to have my family eating mostly healthy whole foods, I’ve had to also learn how to make things at home to be able to work healthy eating into our budget.

Some nutrition-packed foods that are simple and frugal to make at home.

Yogurt. The first is yogurt- full of the benefits of the live active yogurt cultures (probiotics) as well as the calcium and protein found in milk, yogurt is used in smoothies, yogurt pops, as a dip, and just eaten plain.  Yogurt is amazingly easy to make- you use a gallon of milk (I generally buy Organic from Costco but have used the cheap stuff from Wal Mart as well too – and my yogurt has turned out perfect every time I’ve made it), heat it up until it’s too hot to touch to kill off any bad bacteria that may be in there, allow it to cool down until it’s comfortable to touch (so you don’t kill off the good yogurt-making bacteria you’re going to introduce), add in two tablespoons or so of commercial yogurt with live active cultures (pretty much all of them have the live active cultures), and then keep it warm (in an oven or cooler) for 8-12 hours as the cultures work, and the milk is transformed to yogurt.  So easy- I promise! See more detailed instructions in my link above, and after it’s made you can control what healthy ingredients you add; pureed strawberries, apple sauce, maple syrup, honey.  No cheap unhealthy sweeteners are added like sugar or corn syrup.

Cost: 1 gallon of milk $3.26 in our area makes twenty one 6-ounce servings of yogurt.  That works out to 16 cents per serving, compared to Yoplait that retails for 99 cents per 6-ounce container.

Sauerkraut and pickles are a great way to preserve the abundance of your (or a friend’s or neighbor’s) garden. My lactofermented method is the traditional way of preserving that doesn’t use vinegar or require heating- great for the hot summer months when there is so much cheap produce.  Only requires veggies, salt, and filtered water- and is another great way to get probiotics into your diet, as well as stretch out the garden produce all winter long.  I still have green beans in my fridge right now (in May) that I preserved last summer! I was surprised that my normally-skeptical-of-new-foods husband loves homemade sauerkraut on his sandwiches every day.

Granola Bars: Granola bars are the classic health food. Making them yourself provides a nutritious on-the-run snack, made with only wholesome ingredients.  By looking at the ingredients list of your favorite granola bar, you can easily replicate it yourself.  I combine dates, other dried fruit, oats, maple syrup, nuts, and a dab of sea salt in the food processor, press into a glass baking pan, and bake at a low temperature for 30 minutes to set (more information in the link above).  Sliced into the right size for your children or yourself (I cut mine into small squares usually since my children are little) and packaged in mini ziplock bags, you have made a bunch of wholesome snacks in less time than it takes to bake a batch of cookies!

Dried fruits: A healthy sweet snack.  In season fruit, or ripe fruit that has been discounted for quick sale can quickly be preserved in a dehydrator.  Pears are our favorite, apples are great too, the kids love banana chips, and I’m even making fruit leather now!  I own an Excalibur now, but for a long time I borrowed a friend’s dehydrator, which she found at a garage sale.  It’s one of those appliances that you don’t use every day, so sharing the cost with a friend or two could be beneficial for everyone.

I hope this has helped you to see that you can incorporate wholesome foods into your family’s diets while sticking to your budget and not being stuck in the kitchen all day.  Other posts about saving money while eating whole foods: Using Cash for Groceries to Stay on Budget, and 10 Ways To Stretch the Grocery Money.

Making Beds… or not!

photo from Martha Stewart

I must warn you, this may turn into rant…  As you may know, I am getting my house ready to put on the market.  In doing so, it need to look “Better Homes & Gardens” all the time!  One of my ongoing struggles is the bed.

Do you make your bed everyday?  Seriously, do you?

I was brought up to make my bed, do hospital corners – the whole deal.  I actually LOVE hospital corners – even though hubs pulls them out as soon as he gets in bed.  There is nothing better than getting into a freshly made bed with freshly clean sheets!  Did you know that Oprah gets clean sheets put on her bed every day!  How cool would that be.  Unfortunately for us, we do not own that many sheets or have someone else doing our laundry.

Unfortunately that freshly made thing only lasts that one day.  Usually for the rest of the week, the bed does not get made – we are just going to get back in it – right – LOL!!  I am working on getting better – I always feel better and the room stays much less cluttered with a made bed.

My marriage has survived thanks to my KING SIZE bed.  God bless all of you married couples in a smaller bed – I have no idea how you do it.  My bed is also a Tempur-pedic – can I say OMG – I LOVE IT!!  Way too much money, but we got a huge discount and got it as a gift.  If you can ever get a great deal, I highly recommend them!

Now you may be wondering why I would be ranting.  Well first of all, I have only one set of sheets I love.  Got them as a wedding gift and have searched the mfg and store and CANNOT FIND any more!!  They were nothing special, I registered for them based on the color, but they have worn in so soft and comfy, it is nuts!  Also, I find that king size sheets are NEVER big enough.  They barely make it  to either side to be able to tuck in and therefore do not stay tucked in.  How do you get sheets big enough that will stay tucked in??

Now lets talk DUST RUFFLE.  Do you have one?  If you do, how in gods name do you make your bed and tuck in the sheets WITHOUT pulling the dust ruffle in as well?  I mean seriously.

How do you get a comforter or quilt to be large enough to cover the box spring?  Or at least make it to the dust ruffle that is half tucked into the bed – LOL!  I never find a king size that has any extra at all – it barely covers the bed, let alone hang nicely or have pillows under it.

Theoretically say we have solved all those problems – what do you do with the pillows.  We have 2 pillows each and then I have a body pillow and a couple other small pillows we sleep with.  Do you put them under the comforter or on top.  What if you have a body pillow – where does that go and still look nice??  Do you have decorative pillows?  What do you do with those while you sleep – do you toss them on the floor?  I just do not get it!

PLEASE HELP ME!!

I also of course have the issue of the smelly bedroom – you know that “man” smell.  Thankfully my pal over at Mama’sLaundryTalk has a solution to that.  Isn’t it funny when you realize that others have the same issues as you.

Once we move, I am tossing any old, grungy bedding and starting over fresh!  I cannot wait.  Please help me solve my problems before then so I can start off on the right foot with a beautiful, fresh bed – that I WILL make every day – promise.

10 Ways to Measure the Perfect Portion Size

OK – go grab a cup of coffee – the Maven is babbling again…

It is Sunday again, can you believe it. Spring is in the air and it did not come soon enough.  The air is crisp, the sun is shining (unless you are in Texas where it was snowing last night – sorry guys!) and everyone is anxious to get out and move.

As a New Englander, we relish the winter ONLY for the ability to wear comfy, baggy clothing that hides all those flaws.  You know the ones… the extra winter weight we put on.  Little did you know it is an evolutionary necessity to survive in colder weather – LOL!!  Sounds good right?

Unfortunately that does not explain the “muffin top”

defined by Wikipedia as Muffin-top” is a generally pejorative slang term used to describe the phenomenon of overhanging flesh (fat) when it spills over the waistline of pants or skirts in a manner that resembles the top of a muffin spilling over its paper casing

that I sport all year long.  I blame it on my kids… having them, the stress of taking care of them and the emotional eating due to the fact that they do not listen to a thing we say.  You know I am kidding – well sort of.

So along with all this fab weather comes the fear

which then turns to utter panic

when we realize that we will soon have to…
wear shorts and…
God forbid…
a BATHING SUIT!
Oh the HORROR!!
OK, I did it, I said that awful word.  I will not even get into the fact of having to shave our legs all the time – I know TMI!

So what am I going to do?  I have no flippin idea.  I know what I SHOULD do… exercise, eat better, blah blah blah.  My logical self completely understands and knows what I need to do.  Now I just need to get the rest of me signed up!  I did get these really cool Sketcher Shape-up’s (do not worry I got a killer deal at Kohls with sale, free shipping, % off coupon code and CASH back through Shop At Home).  I am expecting in no time I will be a goddess just by doing my house work and walking around all day in these bad boys.  Just kidding – I know that won’t work – they are really cool though.

I will exercise more AND start eating better.  I found this really cool info that puts things into perspecitive.

Of course the portions of veggies (yuk) seem much LARGER than I would like.  We will get into the veggie thing another time.  I could go on for days on that one.  In the past, I became generally aware that we all eat too much when reading the side of the cereal box that claims – 1 serving is 1 cup or something foolish like.  Have you ever poured just that much in a bowl.  I know, I see all the emails flying in now – of course that is all we eat fatty – LOL!

But seriously, even though I know we, as Americans especially, are into the super size me (did you see that documentary by the way – OMG).  I had no idea what the portions we are supposed to eat looked like.  It is definitely an eye opener.  Although – HELLO – a tennis ball sized plate of pasta.  Who in the world…

What surprised you most about the portion sizes?

So I venture forth to attempt to modify my eating and get off my lazy ***

Stay tuned…

Simply Sunday | Laundry

I know it has been a while since I have shared with you some simplification tips as well as exposed you to other fantastic bloggers and resources. The reason for that is that my life is in chaos!!

So what am I doing today you ask – LAUNDRY!

OK – here is my dirty little secret – ok, well maybe not so little! I am horrible at laundry. I hate to do it and I procrastinate which turns into this monster ALL THE TIME.

So what should I do? I know I should have a schedule and all that. I am working on it. AND I have found a really great site – Mama’s Laundry Talk. Can you believe someone actually likes and even LOVES doing laundry? Well, Lauren Hill does. In addition to having a home laundry business, she recently started her blog to share her passion for laundry with us.

I love her ideas on what to do with stray socks and her Keeping your Bedroom Smelling Fresh post really hit home for me. She shares weekly laundry soap deals along with her helpful laundry tips. What I am most looking forward to is her continuing series on creating a laundry schedule. You can all see from the above photos that I really need one!

So check out her site and tell me what goodies you like. I love that she makes me “ALMOST” excited about doing laundry – I have every confidence that as I continue to follow, I will be converted.

I was so excited the other day when I discovered my washer has a timer so I put a load in the before bed so it would finish right when I got up. Usually it sits wet in the washer for days and then I have to re-wash it. What do you do to keep laundry in check?
