Ok Maven of Savin’ readers, I need your help.
I have 2 dogs – really big dogs!
That is Jethro and Ronin. They are Kangal dogs – very similar to the Anatolian Shephards you saw in the movie Cats & Dogs. Along with those really big dogs come loads of dog hair! To say I clean up a small dogs worth on a daily basis is an understatement.
SO, I need to know your opinion on vacuums. What kind do you use and recommend – especially for dog hair? I have an Oreck – but hate the maintenance (it is broke now!!). SORRY I am looking for official poll software, but for the time being, please comment with your ideas -
- Oreck
- Dyson – really want to try one of these!!
- Hoover
- OTHER???
Thank you so much for your help!!

I have a lab who sheds ALOT too. I have a KIRBY vacuum. They are expensive but a good investment-mine is atleast 15 years old!! It was my grandmas and when she moved into a retirement home she gave it to me
I have the bissel pet hair eraser with lift off. I LOVE it, not just for the pet hair remover and the attachment for furniture, but I also love it because it picks up the fine particle dust and crud! I am allergic to dust mites and HATE cleaning since I have to consume Claritin before I even start, this vacuum was recommended by my neighbor who had COPD and two lab mix dogs as well as three cats and she is a vacuuming freak! It is bagless and all the components can come apart and be washed with soap and water, only one of the three filters has to be replaced and it is only $15. I have found I can wash the filter a couple times then replace it. My hubby got it at Target for less than $200, and my neighbor uses hers every other day and has had no problem and she has had hers for over 2 years. She even says her sister has one of those really expensive home sales vacuums and she likes the bissell better! Good luck with the hunt and I hope I helped a little
I have a Dyson DC17 Animal and I love it, unless of course I need to vacuum up anything larger than a teddy graham then I can’t stand it. This vacuum is made more for smaller things. I will say that it does a great job sucking up dirt and hair.
I have 4 indoor cats. Two long hair and two short hair. I also have long hair. I had a Kirby for 6 years and it was the worst purchase I have ever made. It will suck the tacks out of the carpet, but I had to take it apart after EVERY use. My hair would wrap around the piston and I went through a belt for the beater bar about every two months. It has a carpet cleaning attachment that I have never used.
Anyway, I got a Dyson Animal Ball and love it. No bags to mess with, and I have not had to take it apart once. I have had it about 18 months. I did a lot of research before I got the Dyson and am glad I got one. It is also much cheaper than my Kirby was.
Good Luck
Hello, If you are looking for a slight cheaper way around it, Eureka (I think I spelled that right) has a vacuum specialized for pet hair. This will only cost around $65. It does the job with 3 long haired cats. Have FUN vacuuming!!
Lynn,
I don’t have pets….. however…. I LOVE MY DYSON! It is the best vacuum ever. I had to really save $$ for it, but it’s so worth it. And, my best friend DOES have a pet and she has the Dyson for Animals–they make one for pet hair!
I have an English Setter, sheds everytime he shakes. All year round. I have a kenmore. Works well. The way I researched vacuums was the consumer report. Remember if you have allergies it is best to use a vacuum with a bag and get a hepa bag, helps with the dust.
We have a Dyson Animal, and we LOVE it. We borrowed my FIL’s for a couple of days before we bought one, to make sure we liked it and that it was worth the money. We had had about 2-3 vacuums in as many months, all of which had torn up because of our two dogs which shed a TON. We have now had our Dyson for about 3 years, and although it was a lot of money for a vacuum, it has been worth it. I am seriously still in love with it.
We have the Dyson Animal too. Love the vacume hate the weight. The thing is sooo heavy. But I should add that I have a bad back so it may just be me. We have a giant breed dog (looks like Snuffy on Sesame Street) and it’s great. He should be bald with the amount he sheds a day. Maintenance is minimal. The canister couldn’t be easier to empty, just push a button, and you can easily see when it’s full.
Both myself and my parents have the Bissell Pet Hair Eraser with LiftOff!!! WE LOVE THEM!! Not only does it do GREAT with pet hair (mom and dad have a Pomeranian, a long haired cat with flea allergies (dark cat, nearly white carpet, you see thee prob) plus a shorthair who’s white and insists on getting as much fur as possible on chocolate brown furniture; I have a Red Bone aka Red Tick ‘Coon Hound) and it ERASES the hair! Plus, mom, my grandmother and myself have long hair that we shed a lot of frequently…gets that too!
My one best friend bought the Eureka! Pet Hair vacuum, and she hates it. It didn’t pick up much, it’s hard to clean, PLUS it broke almost immediately and the factory won’t honor the warranty…so she has really expensive coat rack.
Oh, when it went, the first time, before the big breakdown, it was the belt breaking on it. The second time, thebelt broke, and broke something important off of the bottom.
Hope this helps!
I love this vacuum too! I also like that I can use it on the bare floor to “sweep”! The lift off rocks…and I don’t know anyone that has tried this vacuum and not liked it! Glad to see there is another Bissell lover!!
I have a vac shop we call Dyson’s diesoons, they are expensive to fix and all that dust and hair ends up back in the air because there is no bag. The best vac for animals is the old fashion Santiaires they last you forever and clean great my sister has Saints 3 of them thats what we got for her. That was 15 years ago and it still works great and she now has 6 dogs, 7 kids and wall to wall carpet. Meile are great Sebo great, Singers made in USA are great, & Hoover good too, kind of heavy. Whatever you get, get a bagged one you will be happier. Go to a vac shop and try them, out look at the websites for these companies. Oreck and Dyson market alot not the best vacs. Good Luck!
I have a dyson for a year now and have had to replace a belt already (over 125 bucks) I really wanted this but now think I could have spent my money more wisely. Btw if you have stairs this vac is so hard to use on the stairs and is wicked heavy! Def look around before jumping into this purchase!
I have a Miele S7 Upright and it is the best !!! I have owned a Dyson, Eureka, Hoover and others and none of them held up to my usage, I was very disappointed. One of my friends have an Oreck and she loves the weight of it but says it takes 3 times longer to vacuum cause the width of the vacuum is so small. Another friend of mine has a Dyson the really expensive model for animal hair and she says mine is amazing compared to hers, she says she has to vacuum over the same spot at least three times to get all the animal hair up, at least from what she can see.
The Miele has a bag but, when you see the quality of the fabric bag you will be impressed, it is a thick non-paper bag it is made of fibers, and the Hepa filter would be awesome for your dogs. I have a dog and a long hair cat and I haven’t been disappointed with this vacuum cleaner. They aren’t cheap though around 650./850. (manual vs. electronic)
I also have to say this is the quietest vacuum I have ever used.
You can read more about this vacuum.

I had a eureka, it weighed a ton and was like a mini workout every time I used it. I hated it…but if you want a workout then maybe it’s good. Too heavy to lug up and down stairs. Now I have a kenmore canister that I love but I had to repair it because the cords in the neck to the power supply broke ($60 repair – not bad). Some in my family have the dyson that I see many people recommend. But if you’re going to spend that much money on a dyson I would recommend the Meile.
These vacs are made in germany, every time I’ve been into my vacuum store to buy bags or repairs I ask about them. Customers have told me they have had theirs for 5yrs, 15yrs, 22yrs and have never done anything to them. there are some models made for pets, some you can run all day without the hose as an air purifier (sooooo quiet). Nice and lightweight, all the wheels swivel, hardwood attachment that glides under furniture, baseboards, fridges. It’s a canister, but once you go to a canister I don’t think you can go back. My vacuum shop will even do a trade and take in your old vacuum and put toward a new one. You might even be able to find a deal on last years model (like at the vacuum cleaner hospital in plaistow NH – there’s my plug for those wonderful guys there!)
We have a Bissell Healthy Home that we have had for about 5 years now. It is a bit on the heavy side but I LOVE it!! It has a canister that is so easy to empty and clean and we have never had to replace any parts (although now that I think about it, maybe you’re supposed to replace the filter?? I might need to look into that!!). We have two small dogs, but they shed and it picks up hair like a charm. It also has a upholstery attachment that works great. Not only does it do an awesome job of picking up the hair, it just cleans carpet in general very well. WE moved into a brand new house and lived in it for one year (rental) and when we moved out the carpet looked like it had never been walked on. (and I have a 5 year old). I got ours at Bed Bath and Beyond with a 20% off coupon so not too bad on the wallet either if you don’t want to spend ass much for a Dyson.
Ok, so you do have to replace the HEPA filter, OOPS!!!! That is on order!! It also looks they have a newer model than my Healthy Home out which is supposed to be lighter, which was my only complaint! You can go read the reviews on Amazon and it will give you a good idea of how good the vacuum is.
I have a bissell pet care vacuum, and have had it for about 4 years. I LOVE it and we have only needed to replace the part that spins (the part that the belt wraps around.) It was only about $20, so I was ok with that after having it for 4 years. If you ever have a belt keep breaking, that would most likely be the issue. Make sure the bottom spins without a struggle…I didn’t know that before this happens. It’s such an easy fix.
Anyway, I’ve had a Hoover and Dirt Devil vacuum before my Bissell, and I would never change back. The Bissell always picks up the hair and the filters are replaced easily and not too expensive. DON’T get a Dirt Devil, they are pieces of crap to put it lightly and their customer service is horrible.
That’s my two cents. Hope it helps.
I have the new Dyson DC28 pet. It is the best vacuum — even my teenager vacuums without being told. I have a long hair dog and a long hair cat on off-white carpet. This vacuum keeps it looking good.
One drawback — it is quite heavy to manuever.
Every body understands that modern life is not very cheap, however different people need cash for various issues and not every man earns big sums money. So to get quick loans or credit loan will be a proper way out.
Do you understand that it is correct time to receive the business loans, which can make you dreams real.
