Todays Tell Me How post is about how we can make a difference. Over the past few days I have been talking about pennies. What is their worth and do we pick them up. The pennies in this world are completely over looked.
Most people overlook them and step right over them…
but not Jeffrey Strain.
Jeffrey is the founder of the Penny Experiment. He picked up a penny last November and a group of teenagers began to snicker.
I have always picked up coins, but their reaction got me thinking. What is a penny really worth? What can one achieve when starting with only a penny?
…I became more convinced that there is value beyond what most people see in the money that is lying on the ground. I believe there is enough value in that penny that it can ultimately help a large number of people. This is my journey as I try to see if I’m correct by turning that “worthless” penny into $1,000,000 of food for local food banks.
WOW – what a HUGE and wonderful goal to have! Now what to do?? Well, he set up his website and convinced Conna Craig that a penny was worth $10. He then turned that single penny into this:
Okay, great. How does he turn that into anything close to $1,000,000 worth of food? First he gave 100 pennies to artists to create art pieces, that included the penny, which will be auctioned off. This is my favorite so far – I think…
Very creative – I would have NEVER thought of that, but how to get $$ now to be able to start getting the food ball rolling! Sell a 50% stake in the art sales for $1000 that’s how. For all you math oriented folks out there (ME ME ME!!!), this penny is now $1009!!
Now here is where I come in. Jeffrey is CALLING ALL COUPONERS to use our skills to help him parlay this penny, now $1009 into $1,000,000 of usable food for food pantries across the nation. How we do this is, well, by doing what we do – finding the best deals and getting as much as we can for as little as we can.
I am honored to be participating in this totally phenomenal undertaking. I regularly donate to my local food pantry and utilize the GREAT DEALS during the fabulous catalinas at my local Shaws. I will continue to do that and will post regularly how much I am contributing to the $1,000,000 goal. You will see my first post/donation tomorrow. I am sooo excited.
Jeffrey’s results to date:
Total Food Donated $4782.11
Total $ Spent $358.78
Stay tuned as I will also be kicking off a “Penny For Your Thoughts” book…
