UPDATE: This is a re-post of VALUABLE INFORMATION and a notification that I will have to STOP receiving coupons from readers to send over. I appreciate all the awesome readers who have been forwarding their expired coupons to me to send along with my package, but I have to cry UNCLE! I just cannot handle doing it anymore and I would hate for them to go to waste sitting here waiting to be sorted. I hope you decide to send them over on your own – postage is the same whether you send them to me or overseas. You just have to do a little more work. THANK YOU for your support!

ORIGINAL POST:
It kills me when people throw there coupon inserts away – that is MONEY!!! I will convert you people later!! What I recently found out is that EXPIRED COUPONS have value too – TO MILITARY FAMILIES stationed overseas!!
Military families stationed overseas are able to use coupons for up to 6 months past their expiration date!!
I just found a site called the Overseas Coupon program. They keep listings of bases that can take donations and need donations. You “adopt” a base – that is their way of tracking volume to each location so they can spread the wealth! It is a fantastic project for you to do as a family or an organization – PTA, etc. In 2009 they have already sent in over $2,073,948 worth of coupons! How cool is that??
Here are the guidelines as to what is and is not accepted on the base:
- Accepted: manufacturer’s coupons
- Accepted: printable coupons
- Not Accepted: manufacturer’s coupons for a Free item. Buy 1 Get 1 is ok.
- Not Accepted: coupons only redeemable at a specific store (i.e., Target, Publix, etc)
- Not Accepted: coupons that are more than 2-3 months past expiration date
- Not Accepted: coupons for restaurants
- Not Accepted: mail in rebate forms
There is tons of info on the site, but here are a few basics. You need to sort them into food items and non-food items. Most military bases have a Commissary and a PX. Food items are sold in the Commissary and non-food items are sold in the PX.
They also would like your to tally the dollar value because the Overseas Coupon Program keeps track of the value of coupons being sent to each base. If they see a base that could use some extra help they let everyone know.
PLEASE adopt a base and send your expired coupons. It does not take a lot of work (if you keep up with it!). The postage is the same as sending mail in the US as the bases are considered on “US soil”.
